Dodge is one of America’s oldest automotive brands, with a long history of making robust vehicles. Over the years, its lineup included the Dodge Ram pickup (now part of the separate Ram division) and the Grand Caravan minivan. Today, the brand is best known for the Dodge Charger and Challenger high-performance cars and the Durango SUV. Regardless of the model, there’s a lot to learn about owning a Dodge.
A factory warranty provides interim protection against manufacturing and materials defects. Dodge’s warranty is typical in its price range (bumper-to-bumper: three years or 36,000 miles, powertrain: five years or 60,000 miles). In a few short years, Dodge owners are on their own to pay for repairs that are more likely to happen as the car gets older. The same applies if you bought a used Dodge with an expired warranty. This is when an Endurance Warranty plan can provide peace of mind through our wide range of auto protection plans or vehicle service contracts.
Driving a Dodge Journey, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Dart, or another model from this Mopar brand can be nerve-racking when there’s no factory protection. However, an extended auto warranty or vehicle service contract can reduce the worry and make car repair costs more predictable.
Compare Dodge warranty options:
Dodge has a mixed reputation for reliability, depending on who’s providing the research and the model. This can be confusing for consumers. RepairPal gives Dodge an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5, giving the company above-average status and 19th place out of 32 brands. In its 2023 review, Consumer Reports gave Dodge a 42 out of 100 reliability score, well below Toyota (79), Honda (70), and numerous other brands. Focusing on specific models, like the Dodge Hornet and Charger Daytona, is more likely to yield specifics helpful to owners and shoppers.
While the current Dodge lineup has been reduced to four models (Charger, Charger Daytona, Hornet, and Durango), other nameplates are still common in driveways and used car shopping lots. For example, the Dodge Journey is an affordable crossover. However, its initial years (2009-2010) only received “fair” quality and reliability ratings from J.D. Power. New examples (2011-2018) are elevated to an “average” ranking.
Meanwhile, the Dodge Hornet, a new compact crossover released, also received a fair J.D. Power ranking. Consumer Reports is less kind, giving the 2025 Hornet a cautionary reliability rating of 30 out of 100.
The Avenger, a compact sedan that was a Dodge staple from 2008 through 2014, never scored above average in J.D. Power’s assessment. The results are mostly similar for the venerable Dodge Grand Caravan. Only the 2019 model year received a “great” quality and reliability score.
Break down Dodge’s reliability record:
According to RepairPal, the average Dodge has an annual maintenance bill of $634, which gives the brand bragging rights over its Detroit rivals Chevrolet ($649) and Ford ($775). However, taking on Dodge’s Japanese competitors in this area is another matter. Here, Honda ($428), Toyota ($441), and Nissan ($500) are less expensive to keep on the road.*
A few Dodge models, the Avenger ($531) and Journey ($562), have below-average maintenance costs. However, more nameplates are above the $634 yearly average. These include the Grand Caravan ($673), Durango ($675), and muscle cars Charger ($652) and Challenger ($650). Except for the Grand Caravan, it’s not unusual to find V8 engines in these models, which can be more expensive to maintain.*
What’s included in these costs? Regular maintenance includes oil and filter changes ($135/service), tire rotations ($45/service), and air filter replacements ($150/service). Repairs aren’t in these calculations. These expenses add up. How much are you ready to spend to keep your Dodge vehicle on the road?
Understand Dodge maintenance costs:
There’s no escaping the fact that the older a car gets, the more likely it is to experience a breakdown. While some repairs can be minor, major service work involving the engine or transmission can run four or five figures.
