Low-mileage vehicles are often the holy grail for used car shoppers. A 10-year-old car that should have 120,000 miles, but has less than half that on the odometer, might be considered a “find.” However, there’s a lot more to consider than how little time the car spent on the road.
An underused vehicle, or one that has spent years sitting in a garage or driveway, can develop problems unrelated to mileage. Inactivity can lead to deteriorated seals, cracked rubber components, brake corrosion, aging tires, stale fluids, battery problems, and mechanical issues that may require expensive repairs.
This doesn’t mean buyers should avoid low-mileage vehicles; quite the contrary, as many can make excellent purchases. However, you should try to find out why the car has so few miles on it. There’s a big difference between a gently used car that was well-maintained and one that spent years in storage.
Understanding the distinctions, along with proactive measures like a pre-purchase inspection and an extended car warranty, can minimize repair risk.
Low mileage means different things to different people. So, let’s work off of averages. According to the Federal Highway Administration, the typical American drives about 13,500 miles annually. An ordinary 10-year-old car should have about 135,000 miles on the odometer.
How much lower than average is “low mileage?” CarGurus affordability research shows that a car purchased for the same budget now carries significantly more miles than it did a few years ago, evidence that meaningfully low-mileage used cars represent a genuine minority of the used market rather than the norm.
The challenge comes from determining why a car accumulated fewer miles than expected. Perhaps the vehicle was owned by a retiree who rarely drove. Also, since the pandemic, more people have been working from home, reducing the time spent behind the wheel and even the need for a car. On the other hand, a vehicle might have sat due to the owner’s health issues or financial problems. Or the worst-case scenario: the car had mechanical problems.
Modern vehicles function best when regularly driven; inactivity can negatively affect many systems. Coolant flow keeps the cooling system in peak condition, while oil circulation preserves seals and lubricates moving parts. At the same time, driving keeps the battery charged. Those are just a few examples of why a car shouldn’t sit idle for extended periods.
While you may think of a car as mostly metal, rubber components are crucial to keeping a vehicle in good operating condition. Here are the vulnerable areas:
This doesn’t cover tires, weatherstripping (for doors, windows, and the trunk), or windshield wiper blades. Regular driving helps maintain component flexibility during weather cycles through fluid circulation, regular maintenance, and periodic cleaning.
Any degradation may not be noticed until the car returns to the road. An engine may develop oil leaks from dried seals. Coolant hoses could crack under pressure. CV boots can split, allowing contamination into drivetrain components.
As a result, buyers shouldn’t assume that low mileage means less wear. This may be the case with some mechanical systems, but age affects rubber regardless of how much the vehicle was used. Seals, hoses, and belts may still need to be replaced.

Brake systems are equally vulnerable to deterioration when not used. Rotors can develop a thin layer of rust after only a few days. That’s not an issue if the car gets driven periodically, as the braking action can clear away the buildup.
However, more significant corrosion can develop if the car sits for months or years. Eventually, the rotor surfaces become pitted as moisture accelerates oxidation. A low-mileage vehicle may be in good mechanical condition but still require significant fluid maintenance to get back on the road. Flushing the brake, power steering, and coolant fluids and replacing the engine oil and transmission fluid can cost $1,000 or more. Fortunately, fluid services are usually straightforward, assuming there are no underlying problems.
Check service records and look for fluid changes based on time-based schedules rather than mileage alone.
One of the often-overlooked challenges of buying a car that’s been parked for a while is the potential for a troublesome battery and electrical system. The vehicle’s 12-volt battery can slowly discharge, leading to a shorter battery life. And most batteries only last three to five years to begin with.
While a trickle charger may help preserve battery health, that may not be enough to keep the battery capable for everyday use. A basic battery test may not show any issues; the trouble may not surface until the car undergoes real-world loads.
Electric problems can extend beyond the battery itself. Corrosion can develop on the battery cables and ground connections. Rodents also have a knack for damaging wiring in stored vehicles. In addition, electronic modules may develop communication issues after extended periods of inactivity. Electrical issues are notorious for being difficult and expensive to diagnose.
A pre-purchase inspection should include a battery load test, a check of the charging system, and a scan for any stored fault codes.
While shoppers may check tire tread depth and sidewall condition, there are other factors to consider about tires. Most important is confirming the age of the tires. A 10-year-old car with 40,000 miles could easily still be on its original tires. However, most tires only have a usable lifespan of 6 to 10 years—the range some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend for replacement regardless of tread wear, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). So, it might be time for replacements, regardless of the remaining tread.
Tire compounds can stiffen and crack over time. Plus, if the car was stationary for any length of time, the tires may have developed flat spots.
Before purchasing any low-mileage vehicle, locate the DOT date code on each tire. The final four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, a code ending in 2418 indicates the tire was produced during the 24th week of 2018. The manufacturer determines a tire’s lifespan, with most recommending replacement at 6–7 years. Some tires are rated for 10 years.

A low-mileage car may look clean and ready for the road after a walk-around, but a professional pre-purchase inspection goes beyond appearance. A $200–$300 investment can catch potential red flags before they become your responsibility.
