10 Used Performance Vehicles Under $10,000

Performance Car Exhaust, Performance vehicles under $10,000

You don’t have to go for broke for truly amazing performance cars. And with an extended warranty, also called a vehicle service contract (VSC), maintenance and reliability can be protected in the long run. The following 10 vehicles are head and shoulders faster and more powerful than any new commuter at a significantly lower price point.

Audi S4 (B6)

Under the hood of this handsome luxury sedan is a 4.2-liter, 40-valve V8 making 340 horsepower in its stock form alone. You get Audi’s dynamics and “Quattro” all-wheel drive. The B6 S4 (model years 2002 to 2005) can still be found for around $5,000 on the private market in good condition, though well-kept examples with desirable specs regularly list for $12,000 or more.

Typical price range: $5,000 to $16,000, depending on condition and mileage

BMW 540i (E39)

Yes, BMW’s M5 version is the better driver’s car, but the 540i is the E39 you want to own, thanks to its higher reliability. It doesn’t have 400 horsepower, but with 282 horses from its 4.4-liter V8, you’ll still feel the low-end torque in your neck. These were produced from 1997 to 2003, and prices vary widely based on condition.

Typical price range: $5,000 to $14,000

Chevrolet Camaro SS (F Body)

In terms of hitting 0-60 in a way you feel it, the Chevrolet Camaro SS has plenty of bang for the buck. Powered by the LS1 5.7-liter V8 making 325 horsepower, this fourth-generation Camaro (1998 to 2002) is not a good car for sharp turns and corners, but you’ll sure have fun on zippy straight lines. Fair warning: these have appreciated considerably in recent years.

Typical price range: $10,000 to $26,000 or more, depending on condition and mileage

Dodge Neon SRT-4

The Dodge Neon has always been just kind of cute and generally competent, but the turbocharged SRT-4 (model years 2003 to 2005) is deceptively and viciously quick on its wheels, producing 215 horsepower from a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. WARNING: Do not even think about buying someone’s heavily modified project. Keep an eye out for “torque steer.” Clean, stock examples are getting harder to find.

Typical price range: $10,000 to $17,000

Infiniti G35 Coupe

The remaining Infiniti G35 coupes (2003 to 2007) are all going to be well over 15 years old, meaning it’s going to be difficult but not impossible to find coverage for them, depending on the plan tier and eligibility. However, it’s an extraordinarily reliable car with a gorgeous design that still looks great, even today. They’re fun, they’re quick, and they remain one of the better deals on this list.

Typical price range: $5,000 to $10,000

Lexus IS300

You might be considering a used BMW 3 Series, which is a huge risk in terms of maintenance and reliability. Opt instead for the first-generation Lexus IS. The IS300 (2001 to 2005) has 215 horsepower from its legendary 2JZ-GE inline-six, excellent handling, and a timelessly handsome design. Clean examples have been climbing in value.

Typical price range: $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition and mileage

Mitsubishi 3000GT

We’ll admit we are saddened by a lot of the current Mitsubishi lineup today, since it’s getting harder and harder to imagine that the company behind the Mirage used to build world-class sports cars. In its heyday, the 3000GT (1990 to 1999) was exactly that. It comes in a twin-turbo, all-wheel drive VR-4 variant. NOTE: This has become one of those sought-after cars that have steadily increased in value. VR-4 models now command a serious premium.

Base/SL price range: $10,000 to $25,000, depending on condition and mileage
VR-4 price range: $19,000 to $45,000 or more

Nissan 300ZX

In the 90s, before we had the Nissan 350Z, there was the 300ZX (1990 to 1996). Anyone looking to get their hands on a rear-drive Japanese sports car should look into this. Look harder for an intact Twin Turbo coupe, and you’ll find yourself behind the wheel of one of the true darlings of 1990s import performance. Like the 3000GT, Twin Turbo models have appreciated significantly.

Typical price range: $10,000 to $21,000, depending on condition and mileage
Twin turbo price range: $15,000 to $30,000 or more

Porsche 944

While it’s true that used Porsche 911 prices are skyrocketing, the 944 (1982 to 1991) offers a genuine Porsche driving experience at a fraction of the 911’s cost. The 944 might not be the 911, but it’s still one of their all-time performers with excellent handling and balance. Base models can still be found at a reasonable entry point.

Typical price range: $10,000 to $23,000, depending on condition and mileage
Turbo and S2 price range: Will have higher prices

Volvo V70 R

So, you want a performance car but still need something practical to take the kids to soccer practice? The Volvo V70 R (2003 to 2007) is the correct answer. It may be a station wagon, but it’s packing 300 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five, all-wheel drive, and an available manual transmission. Soccer practice is over, and you need to PICK IT UP!

Typical price range: $10,000 to $19,000, depending on condition and mileage

The cars on this list run a little older, but they are worthy finds if you believe in getting the biggest bang for your buck. A few, like the Infiniti G35 and certain Audi S4 examples, can still be found under $10,000 with some hunting. Others, particularly the Camaro SS, 3000GT VR-4, and 300ZX Twin Turbo, have climbed well past that mark.
