Porsche Reliability

Porsche’s reliability can be challenging to pin down because of the lack of available data. Modest sales, compared to mainstream brands, mean fewer owners report about the brand’s dependability. Meanwhile, J.D. Power can provide some quality and reliability insight into some of the more popular Porsche models. The Porsche Macan, the company’s best-seller, has received mostly “great” ratings since its 2015 debut. The 2020 model year shifts to “average” status (no report for 2019). Reliability for the Porsche Cayenne bounces between average and great since 2008, with more recent years (2023-2025) staying more consistently in great territory.

Other Reliability Issues

J.D. Power assessments for the Porsche Boxster and Cayman (which became the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman after 2016) are less consistent. However, among the handful of reviewed years, the rankings don’t dip below great. In fact, the 2021 718 Boxster earned a “best” designation. The Porsche Panamera scored average standings for 2011 and 2022, with 2018 ranking as great.

The Porsche 911 deserves recognition for several years (2015-2016, 2018-2019, and 2023) with the best quality and reliability rating from J.D. Power. Most other years since 2011 still have great designations—only the 2020 model trails with an average ranking.

Porsche Maintenance Costs

Porsche’s high price tags are accompanied by expensive upkeep costs. The average owner spends $1,192* annually to keep their car on the road. Other German brands have lower maintenance costs: Mercedes-Benz ($908), BMW ($968), and Audi ($987).*

For the most part, maintenance costs for specific Porsche models hover close to the $1,192 average. This includes the Cayman ($1,135), Cayenne ($1,231), and Panamera ($1,252). The Porsche Macan compact SUV has the most expensive upkeep costs at $1,265 annually. The below-average maintenance cost models include the Porsche 911 ($1,072) and the pre-2017 Boxster ($952).*

Common Repairs for Porsche Vehicles

While the Porsche lineup enjoys a reasonably good reputation for reliability and driving experience with Consumer Reports and J.D. Power, these vehicles are far from perfect. And when repairs happen, the work and replacement parts can be pretty expensive.

One of the most far-reaching Porsche problems involves the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing affecting most 911, Boxster, and Cayman models from 1997 to 2008. In affected cars, the IMS bearing can fail due to premature wear, resulting in catastrophic engine failure. Retrofitting the engine before any damage occurs can cost up to $5,000.*

Other common Porsche repairs include replacing the CV axle in a 718 Spyder ($3,200 to $3,450) and an axle shaft in a Cayenne ($1,450 to $1,911). Installing a new brake booster in a 911 can run $1,050 to $1,500, while a replacement rack and pinion system in a Panamera costs $5,600-$6,000. Expect to pay $2,150 to $2,800 for a new starter in a Macan.*

Affordable Porsche Ownership: Boxster Models Under $25K

Porsche ownership doesn’t have to start at six figures. The Boxster is the most affordable entry point into the brand, and as noted above, it carries some of the lowest annual maintenance costs in the Porsche lineup at roughly $952 per year. Used Boxster models from 2011 to 2015, spanning the 987.2 and 981 generations, can be found for $12,000 to $25,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim.

A mid-engine layout, flat-six power, and precise handling give the Boxster a driving experience that punches well above its used-market price point. That said, buyers should be aware of potential common Porsche issues, including the IMS bearing concern on earlier models and routine costs like brake and suspension work.
